About Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is a compact wildlife destination centred on a striking semi-alkaline lake in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. The park is internationally recognised for its birdlife and is an important sanctuary for both black and white rhinos, combining lake scenery with grasslands, acacia woodland, cliffs and rocky viewpoints.

Travelers can encounter rhinos, buffalo, zebras, waterbuck, giraffes, lions and, with luck, leopards during game drives. Flamingos remain an important part of the destination’s identity, although their numbers and distribution around the lake can vary with changing water conditions. The surrounding habitats also support a wide range of other bird species.

Lake Nakuru works particularly well for shorter safaris and travellers combining several destinations in the Rift Valley. Its relatively accessible location near Nairobi, concentrated wildlife and strong rhino presence make it a practical contrast to the larger, more expansive ecosystems of Maasai Mara and Tsavo East.
